Kondagaon (Bastar), Chhattisgarh | In a deeply symbolic blend of sport, agriculture, and rural innovation, international hockey player Anurag Raghuvanshi has arrived in Bastar and formally joined the Maa Danteshwari Herbal Group, marking a significant shift from international sports arenas to grassroots agricultural engagement.
After travelling thousands of kilometres by road, Raghuvanshi reached Kondagaon in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, where he met agricultural experts and rural innovators, including Dr. Rajaram Tripathi. The visit, described by observers as both emotional and visionary, focused on sustainable farming, rural livelihoods, and the revival of indigenous agricultural practices.
From International Fields to Farmlands
Having represented India in over 35 international hockey matches, Anurag Raghuvanshi reflected on his journey with humility and introspection. He shared that while hockey gave him global recognition and invaluable experience, his heart has increasingly drawn him back to his rural roots.
“I could have built a long career abroad, but now I want to return to my village life and work for farmers,” he reportedly said during interactions at the herbal farm.
Raghuvanshi expressed a strong desire to contribute not only to sports development but also to agricultural sustainability, particularly in strengthening farmer incomes and promoting eco-friendly cultivation methods.
Exploring Bastar’s Herbal Innovation
During his visit, the athlete explored experimental cultivation fields featuring high-value crops such as Bastar’s specialty black pepper variety, locally known as MDBP-16, and naturally sweet stevia leaves reported to be up to 25 times sweeter than sugar. He also sampled the region’s herbal tea, which has gained attention for its aroma and medicinal properties.
He was accompanied by local coordinators including Dasmati Netam and Shankar Nag, who guided him through various farming innovations and ongoing rural development projects.
The athlete showed particular interest in the integration of traditional knowledge with modern agronomy, praising the model as a scalable approach for rural India.
A Formal Step Toward Rural Collaboration
A major highlight of the visit was Raghuvanshi’s formal association as a member of the Maa Danteshwari Herbal Group. His decision was seen as a strong endorsement of the group’s work in organic farming, medicinal plant cultivation, and farmer training programs across tribal regions.

The group’s leadership welcomed the move, stating that collaboration with public figures from diverse fields could help amplify awareness about sustainable agriculture and encourage youth participation in farming.
Voices on India’s Sports Priorities
The visit also sparked a broader discussion on India’s sports ecosystem. Participants raised concerns over the disproportionate attention given to cricket compared to other sports like hockey. They emphasized that hockey, once India’s pride on the global stage, deserves equal institutional support, media coverage, and sponsorship opportunities.
Raghuvanshi’s presence, they noted, symbolizes how athletes from mainstream sports can play a role in reshaping rural engagement and inspiring balanced sports development.
Future Plans for Bastar’s Youth
According to discussions during the visit, Raghuvanshi has expressed willingness to assist in training and mentoring young hockey players in Bastar. A structured plan focusing on coaching camps, skill development, and motivational programs is expected to be developed in upcoming meetings.
A Gesture of Respect and Connection
At the conclusion of the visit, the athlete presented Dr. Rajaram Tripathi with a jacket, tracksuit, and T-shirt as a gesture of appreciation. In turn, he was warmly acknowledged by the hosts, reinforcing the spirit of mutual respect and cultural exchange that defined the entire visit.
The event in Kondagaon stands as a rare intersection of sport, agriculture, and social transformation—highlighting how personal journeys can evolve into broader movements for rural empowerment and sustainable development.
